Frequently Asked Questions
Exactly what is the Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio?
The Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio is a community based children’s chorus. It is open to all 3-9 grade children in the Northwest Ohio area. The Jubilate Choir is for children in grades 3-5 and the Bel Canto Choir is for children in grades 5-9. The program's mission is to provide an enrichment experience for those children who have a talent and interest in singing and desire an opportunity to sing in a children’s choir. Through their participation in the choir, children will gain a greater understanding of how to use their voices in song, sing musically, participate in various musical experiences and have the opportunity to create friendships with others who share their interest in music.
Who can join the Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio?
Any child in grades 3-9, who can make a firm Monday evening rehearsal commitment, (Sept-April), is welcome to audition for the choir.
What are the auditions like?
Auditions are very non-threatening. They only take 10 minutes and are done in a small group setting. Children do not need to prepare a piece.
When and where are rehearsals held?
Rehearsals begin with a mandatory Sunday afternoon camp on Sept. 18, 2011 from 3:00-6:00 and then our weekly Monday rehearsals begin on Sept. 19. The Jubilate Choir rehearses from 5:30-6:30 and the Bel Canto Choir reherses from 6:10-7:45. All rehearsals will be held at Community of Christ Lutheran Church, 6517 Finzel Rd. in Whitehouse. What is the tuition cost?
Annual tuition to be a member of the Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio is $350.00 for the Jubilate Choir and $385.00 for the Bel Canto Choir. This includes all 90 minute rehearsals, camp days, performances, music, folders and other expenses. Other incidentals will include a uniform fee. Travel costs for the Bel Canto Choir will be financed by a combination of parent pay and fundraising. Tuition assistance is available.
Should my child take voice lessons?
The best singing experience that children of this age can receive is being in a choir of young voices. Learning to blend with other voices is a major part of learning to sing at a young age and this cannot be accomplished in a private lesson format. Rehearsals are planned around teaching children to blend their voices, sing with a pure sound, sing with expression, and sightread music. In addition, singing in a group setting is a great social activity that cannot be replicated in a private lesson format.
How often does the Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio perform?
Most likely, this season will bring 4-6 performance opportunities for the Jubilate Choir and 8-10 performance opportunities for the Bel Canto Choir our way.
What kind of music does the Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio sing?
We sing music that is specifically written for children’s voices. Much of this is folk music from America and many countries around the world and is arranged for unison, two or three part voices. One of the goals of the choir is to introduce children to many genres of music including gospel, jazz, classical, sacred and secular music. As children’s exposure to different styles broadens, their appreciation of all types of music is enhanced and they grow as musicians. All music selected is age-appropriate but is also selected to challenge the choir to accomplish specific musical skills.
Is the Children's Choir Of Northwest Ohio affiliated with Community of Christ Lutheran Church?
No, it is not. The children's choir is its own separate entity and is not tied to any other organization. The fellowship hall of the church provides us with an ideal, flexible rehearsal space.
What does the choir wear for their concerts?
A new concert dress is being researched. More details will be in place soon!
Are parents allowed to sit in on rehearsals?
Parents are encouraged to sit in and witness what their child accomplishes during any of our rehearsals. It is requested however that arrangements are made to leave younger siblings at home.
